You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  Galatians 3:26-28

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian?

People have defined the meaning of being a Christian in many ways.  Some focus on the moral principles that come from Jesus’ teachings.  Others focus on the willingness to love and serve others.  However, in the Bible, Christians were known by their faith and trust in Jesus.  At New Life, we believe that everyone person needs and can have new life in Christ.  Below is a simple description of how one becomes a Christian.

In Acts 16:25-34, we see a wicked man who asks the most important question any man can ask today.

Look back at the question the jailer asked “What must I do to be saved?”

The answer:  “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you and your family will be saved.”

1. What do I need to believe about the Lord Jesus Christ?

  • He is God.

For in Christ the fullness of God lives in a human body, Colossians 2:9

  • He died on the cross to forgive your sins.

Christ also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.  1 Peter 3:18

  • He was buried and three days later He rose to live again.

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me — that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said. 5 He was seen by Peter and then by the twelve apostles. 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

2. What do I need to acknowledge about myself?

  • I have sinned and I am sorry for all my sins.

For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23

  • I, through my own efforts, cannot please God. I must trust in Jesus to forgive me and save me.

He brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with your entire household.” Acts 16:30-31

  • I want to spend my life on earth and in heaven as His child and to please Him each day.

For to me, living is for Christ, and dying is even better. Yet if I live, that means fruitful service for Christ. I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: Sometimes I want to live, and sometimes I long to go and be with Christ. That would be far better for me, but it is better for you that I live. Philippians 1:21-24

3. Some will still ask, “But is that all I have to do?  Don’t I have to do good works?

God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9

So, the questions for you are simple:

Do you by faith believe in the Lord Jesus Christ- that He is God, He died for your sins, and was raised to life again?  ____ Yes   ____ No

Do you acknowledge these 3 statements about yourself: I have sinned and I am sorry; I cannot please God myself, I must depend on Him; I want to live for Him now and in heaven?   ___Yes ___ No

______ 願   ______ 不願意

Because of what you now believe, are you ready to put your trust in Christ alone and to invite Him into your life?

“Dear Lord Jesus, I believe in You.  I am sorry for my sins.  Please forgive me.  I believe that You died to take away all my sins. Thank you for sacrificing your life for me.  I choose to receive You into my life as my Savior and Lord.  I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Bible says:

Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.  John 1:12

That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  Romans 10:9

What Are The Biblical Symbols Of Salvation?

Why Should I Be Baptized?

1. To follow the example set by____JESUS________ 追隨 _____耶穌______ 立下的典範。

“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river.”  Mark 1:9

2. Because Christ _    COMMANDED_________it. 因為耶穌要我們 _____受洗______

“Jesus said, ‘Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.’”  Matt. 28:19-20

3.  It demonstrates that I really am a____CHRISTIAN___     受洗表明了我真的是 _____基督徒______

“…many of the people who heard Him believed and were baptized.”  Acts 18:8

“We know that we have come to know Him, if we obey His commands.”  1 John 2:3

What Is The Meaning Of Baptism?

1. It illustrates Christ’s___DEATH________________ and resurrection.

“Christ died for our sins…  He was buried…and He rose again.”

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

“For when you are baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ.  Colossians 2:12

2. It illustrates my_____NEW LIFE___________ as a Christian.

“When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside.  The old life has passed away and a new life has begun!”  2 Corinthians 5:17

By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead…so also we may live a new life!”  Romans 6:4

Baptism doesn’t make you a believer — it shows that you already believe.  Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that.  Baptism is like a wedding ring — it’s the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith…it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9

Why Be Baptized By Immersion?

Because______JESUS __________ was baptized that way.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.”  Matthew 3:16

Every baptism in the  ____BIBLE________________was by immersion.

(Example)  “…then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him.  When they came up out of the water…”  Acts 8:38-39

The word “Baptize” means to ______DIP UNDER_________water”.

The Greek word baptizo means, “to immerse or dip into something”.

It best symbolizes a burial and resurrection!

The founders of denominations agree:

Martin Luther (Lutheran Church)…“I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the word imports and the mystery signifies.”

John Calvin (Presbyterian Church)…“The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse.  It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church.”
John Wesley (Methodist Church)…“Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church.”

Who Should Be Baptized?

Every person who has ______BELIEVED__________in Christ should be baptized.

Those who believed and accepted His message were baptized…”  Acts 2:41

“Simon himself believed and was baptized…”  Acts 8:13

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News…and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.”  Acts 8:12

At New Life, we wait until children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them.

Some churches practice a “baptism of confirmation” for children.  This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on the behalf of the child.  The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his own personal confession of Christ.  This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed.  This is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible, which was only for those old enough to believe.  The purpose is to publicly confess your personal commitment to Christ.

At New Life, those desiring to become members  should be baptized the way Jesus demonstrated.

When Should I Be Baptized?  AS SOON AS YOU HAVE BELIEVED!

“Those who believed…were baptized…that day!”  Acts 2:41

“Then Philip began with the scripture and told him the Good News about Jesus.  As they traveled along the road, they came to some water, and the man said, ‘Look, here is water!  Why shouldn’t I be baptized right now?’  Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’  The man answered, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’  So they went down into the water and Philip baptized him.”  Acts 8:35-38

There is no reason to delay.  As soon as you have decided to receive Christ into your life, you can and should be baptized.  If you wait until you are “perfect”, you’ll never feel “good enough”!

Can my family be baptized together?

Yes!  If each family member understands fully the meaning of baptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust in Christ for salvation, we encourage families to be baptized at the same time.  It is a wonderful expression of commitment.  Young children who wish to be baptized are asked to meet with our Minister of Children for a pre-baptism conversation.

However, it is important to remember that baptism is a personal statement of faith, not a family tradition.  It is usually not wise to delay your baptism while waiting on other family members to accept Christ, particularly children.  This puts an undue pressure on them, and delays your obedience.

What should I wear when I am baptized?

Women should wear shorts and a top or a “muumuu” style dress rather than a swimsuit.  Men may wear a swimsuit.  We try to have robes for you to wear.  Bring a change of clothes, a towel, and a plastic bag for your wet clothes.  We provide changing rooms.

THE SYMBOL OF COMMUNION (The Lord’s Supper)

Jesus never asked His disciples to remember His birth.  But He did instruct them to remember His death and resurrection.  The Lord’s Supper is an object lesson that represents a great spiritual truth for believers.

What Is Communion?  (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

  • It is a_____SIMPLE ACT___________________
  • 聖餐是 _____(耶穌)清楚的示範________

“The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread…” (vs. 23)

  • It is a_________REMINDER_________________
  • 聖餐是一個 _______紀念________

“…and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; eat it in remembrance of me.’” (vs. 24)

  • It is a__________SYMBOL_______________
  • 聖餐是一個 ________豫表_________

“In the same way, He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; drink it to remember me.’” (vs. 25)

  • It is a_______STATEMENT OF FAITH_________________
  • 聖餐是一個 _______信仰的宣告________

“For whenever you eat the bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes back.” (vs. 26)

Who Should Take Communion?

Only those who are already___BELIEVERS________________  (Mark 14:22-26)

“For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment upon himself.”  1 Cor. 11:29

How Do I Prepare Myself For Communion?

“Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  A person ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.”  1 Cor. 11:27-28

1.  Self-Examination

Confessing My Sins 認罪

Matt. 5:23-24

When and How Often Should We Observe Communion?

Jesus never said when or how often believers should observe The Lord’s Supper.  He instituted it on a Thursday night.   At New Life we observe Communion on a regular basis on Sunday afternoons and at other gatherings of believers as appropriate.
