Part 2- Be A Witness In Your Jerusalem— Empowered Like The Early Church

(Listen to the sermon,

Quick Recall Of Part 1

Who is in your Jerusalem?

  • Family家人
  • Friends朋友
  • Co-workers同事

Be careful:  This is not about you, it is about us.  You are not alone and you are not powerless.

1. The Power Of The Spirit

4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Acts 2:4-6

  • The tongues they spoke were languages people in the crowd knew, but were not known by the followers of Jesus.  This is unlike most tongues practiced today.

27 No more than two or three should speak in an unknown language. They must speak one at a time, and someone must be ready to interpret what they are saying. 28 But if no one is present who can interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak in tongues to God privately.

1 Corinthians 14:27-28

7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs–we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”  Acts 2:7-13

  • Notice they were hearing about the wonders of God.  How has God been wonderful to you?  Who knows about it?  Don’t be surprised if some people make fun of you.

2. The Power Of The Community

42 They joined with the other believers and devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, sharing in the Lord’s Supper and in prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

  • They were a new community that developed deep friendships and generously supported those in need and regularly shared with each other.  But they were not just a social organization.  They also seriously studied the teaching of the apostles, worshipped God in prayer and shared the Lord’s Supper.  They had a deep respect for their God as they witnessed His power through signs and wonders
  • Even as they were clearly a spiritual community, they connected with those outside of the community and they saw their community grow day after day.

3. The Power Of Boldness 的力量

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men who had had no special training. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.  Acts 4:13

  • The religious leaders were most amazed by the boldness of Peter and John.  Their boldness was not based on special training or special abilities.  It was based on the time they had spent with Jesus.
  • When I am with Jesus, I have no reason to be timid.

4. The Power Of Persecution

18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the jail. 19 But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them, 20 “Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!” 21 So the apostles entered the Temple about daybreak and immediately began teaching.  Acts 5:18-21

40 The council accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go. 41 The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Jesus. 42 And every day, in the Temple and in their homes, they continued to teach and preach this message: “The Messiah you are looking for is Jesus.”  Acts 5:40-42

  • The apostles were rejoicing in their persecution—-not because they liked pain, but because they knew that the name of Jesus would continue to be proclaimed.
  • They continued teaching and preaching in public and in private that Jesus was the answer to their hope—that a Messiah would come.  We share with our Jerusalem because we know that Jesus is the answer.
