Baptism stories

(Listen to the sermon,

1. The Slave Girl’s Story

16 One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a demon-possessed slave girl. She was a fortune-teller who earned a lot of money for her masters. 17 She followed along behind us shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.” 18 This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and spoke to the demon within her. “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her,” he said. And instantly it left her. 19 Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace.  Acts 16:16-19

  • She was in bondage to wicked demons (able to really do fortune telling—not a fake) and to wicked bosses.
  • She was a tool of deception and annoyance.
  • She was set free from the demons and her bosses by Jesus.

2. Jailer’s Story

  • Paul and Silas’ pain was the jailer’s gain.

22A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So he took no chances but put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks. Acts 16:22-24

  • There is power in praying and singing to God.

25 Around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Don’t do it! We are all here!” Acts 16:25-28

  • God not only shook up the jail, He also shook up the jailer.

29 Trembling with fear, the jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 He brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Acts 16:29-30

  • Their answer was short and clear.

31 They replied, “Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with your entire household.” 32Then they shared the word of the Lord with him and all who lived in his household. Acts 16:31-32

To be saved you need to understand two things and make one big choice:

1) I understand the bad news from God

2) I understand the Good News from God

3) I choose to believe and trust in Jesus to save me.

  • The jailer and his family all believed and all were baptized.

33 That same hour the jailer washed their wounds, and he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. 34 Then he brought them into his house and set a meal before them. He and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.  Acts 16:33-34

3. What’s Your Story?

  • If you are in chapter one, “My Life Without Jesus” how would you summarize this chapter in your life?
  • If you are in chapter two, “Taking Steps Toward Jesus” how close are you to trusting in Him and what is holding you back?
  • If you are in chapter three, “My Life With Jesus” how would you describe your relationship with Jesus recently?

38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. 39 Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
